Visiting the deceased
Supporting You in Saying Goodbye
Deciding whether to view your loved one before the funeral can be one of the most personal and emotional choices you face. At our funeral home, we are here to support you through every step of this process with compassion and understanding.
Making Your Decision
Some people feel an instinctive need to see their loved one again, while others decide not to. This decision is deeply personal, and there is no right or wrong choice. It may depend on how you’re feeling emotionally, the circumstances of your loved one’s passing, or your desire to either say a final goodbye or preserve a memory of them as they were.
If you are unsure what is best for you, take the time to reflect on how seeing your loved one might affect you. Consider what would help you in your grieving process. The funeral director will also be available to advise and prepare you if needed.
What to Expect
Should you choose to view your loved one, this will take place in a calm and private space designed to offer comfort and tranquillity. The viewing room will typically be tastefully and simply decorated, often with flowers and seating, creating an environment where you can reflect and say goodbye in peace.
Funeral directors will explain what to expect beforehand, including how your loved one may appear. This guidance is offered to help prepare you and make the experience as gentle as possible.
Saying Goodbye in Your Own Way
During the viewing, you may wish to speak to your loved one, sit quietly, or touch them if you feel comfortable, which is usually allowed unless advised otherwise. Everyone’s way of saying goodbye is unique, and there is no need to feel pressure to act a certain way.
After the Viewing
For many, this moment can be deeply emotional, as the reality of the loss may feel more tangible. You might find comfort in speaking to a close friend or seeking the guidance of a bereavement counsellor after the experience. Alternatively, you may prefer to have some time alone to process your emotions.
Even if the experience feels overwhelming initially, with time, it often becomes an important part of coming to terms with your loss and starting the healing process. We are here for you throughout, offering support whenever you need it.
Sometimes, due to the nature of a loved one’s passing or the timescale of their funeral, it may not be possible for you to visit them before their final farewell. This can add another layer of difficulty and grief to an already challenging situation. We understand that saying goodbye in person is important and we want to support you through this process as well. If you are unable to visit your loved one, our team is here to offer guidance on alternative ways to honour and remember them during this time. Whether it’s through creating a memory box or sending letters or messages, we can help you find meaningful ways to stay connected with your loved one until they are laid to rest.
