Steps to obtaining a death certificate
Losing a loved one is an incredibly difficult time, and we understand that dealing with the necessary processes can feel overwhelming. To help make things simpler, we’ve outlined the steps involved in obtaining a death certificate and the role of medical examiners.
The Process of Obtaining a Death Certificate
1. Authorisation for Medical Certificate of Cause of Death (MCCD)
A GP or medical professional will liaise with the local Medical Examiner’s Office to gain authorisation to prepare the MCCD. This step can take a few hours.
2. Issuing the MCCD
Once authorised, a GP or medical professional will complete the MCCD. This document will then be sent electronically to the local Registrar’s Office.
3. Contact from the Registrar Office
Once the formal death certificate is issued by the Registrar Office, the relatives of the deceased will be contacted directly by them to arrange collection of the certificate. You do not need to visit the GP surgery for this process.

Understanding the Role of Medical Examiners
The medical examiner process was introduced to help families during this sensitive time. This service provides an independent review of the cause of death and aims to support next of kin with any questions or concerns they may have.
What Happens Next?
1. A Call from the Medical Examiner’s Office
Within 24 hours of the death, the next of kin will usually receive a call from the medical examiner’s office. During this call, the team will explain the cause of death, discuss any care your loved one received, and answer any questions you may have.
2. If Needed, Referral to the Coroner
If the cause of death is unclear, the medical examiner can guide you through the referral to the coroner if required.
3. Issuing the Certificate
Once the call with the medical examiner is complete, the MCCD will be sent electronically to the local Registrar Office. You can then book an appointment to register the death.
You do not need to visit the GP surgery to collect the MCCD.
