What to do when someone dies abroad
At H J Newington Funeral Directors we know that dealing with the loss of a loved one is one of the most challenging experiences anyone can face. If this happens abroad, the grief can be compounded by navigating unfamiliar legal systems and cultural practices. At H J Newington, we understand how overwhelming this situation can be and are here to provide guidance and assistance during this difficult time.
This advice applies to England. For regional guidance, see Northern Ireland, Scotland, or Wales.
If You’re Travelling with Them
If someone dies while you’re abroad together, your first step should be to contact the nearest British embassy, High Commission or consulate. They can advise you on what to do next and help you liaise with local authorities. If you’re on a package holiday, inform your tour operator immediately. Large operators often have welfare teams to assist in making necessary arrangements.
If You’re in the UK
If a close relative or friend dies abroad while you’re in the UK, the local British consulate will typically notify the UK police, who will then inform the next-of-kin. However, if you’re informed of the death by other means, such as through tour operators, you should contact the Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO). They’ll keep you updated and provide support with the necessary arrangements.
Registering the Death
The death must be registered in the country where it occurred. Some countries also allow you to register the death with the Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office in the UK.
When registering, ensure you bring the following information:
- Full name of the deceased
- Date of birth
- Passport number and issuance details
- Next-of-kin information (if you are not the closest relative)
You can find more specifics about registering deaths abroad on GOV.UK.
Funeral Arrangements
Once the death is registered, you’ll need to decide whether the funeral will take place abroad or if the body will be repatriated to the UK.
Repatriation (Returning the Body to the UK)
Repatriation can feel daunting, but the process becomes more manageable with help from international undertakers or consulates. Here’s what you’ll need:
- A certified, English-translated death certificate
- Authorisation to remove the body from the country
- A certificate of embalming
Once back in the UK, you’ll need to inform the Registrar of Births, Deaths and Marriages in the funeral district. If the funeral involves cremation, Home Office permission is also required.
Funeral Costs
Repatriation and overseas funerals can be expensive. Be sure to confirm costs in advance and check if these are covered by the deceased’s travel insurance or an additional policy. The FCDO does not cover repatriation or burial costs, but certain benefits may enable claims for assistance, especially within Europe or select countries like Iceland, Liechtenstein, or Norway. Learn more about funeral payment benefits.
Travel Insurance Claims
If the deceased held travel insurance, you might be able to claim funeral or repatriation expenses. Get in touch with the insurance provider as soon as possible. Many policies include access to local assistance firms, who can coordinate international undertakers and provide support.
Investigating Suspicious Circumstances
If you suspect foul play, the British embassy can advise you on raising concerns with local authorities. They can also help you find legal counsel in the country where the death occurred.
